Catalogue Note
This is the unpublished musical archive of the Australian composer George Howard Clutsam (1866-1951). Born in Sydney, he settled in London in 1889 and, before embarking on a successful career as an arranger for films and shows (including in 1922, Lilac Time), he composed this orchestral and chamber repertory. None of the music in this archive appears to be published. Even the symphonic idyll after Tennyson, "The Lady of Shalott" (1901), which was performed by Landon Ronald's New Symphony Orchestra in 1909, was never published. There is also extensive music here by Clutsam for the 1935 film La Boheme (starring Douglas Fairbanks and Gertrude Lawrence) and for Drake, a play. A detailed list for this lot is available on request.
