Catalogue Note

Autograph music by Villa-Lobos is rare at auction.  The Wind Trio was composed in 1921 and first performed in Paris in 1924. This passage comprises the fourth, fifth and sixth bars of the second movement ("Languisamente"), which are characterized by ever-changing metres: 9/8 (=4/4 + 1/8), 4/4 and 5/4.   The papers of the recipient, American critic and writer on music Irving Schwerke (1893-1975), are now at the Music Division of the Library of Congress.
