Catalogue Note

Pole is an aleatoric work for two performers with short-wave radio receivers and a sound projectionist.  The use of short-wave radio enabled Stockhausen to bring together sounds issuing from radio broadcasts all over the globe simultaneously, the basic material for the work being determined by chance.   Pole was given over a thousand times at the "Expo '70" in Osaka between March and September 1970, each performance drawing on different radio broadcasts.  The work was published by Stockhausen as Pole für 2 in 1975, for which purpose this manuscript may have been used.
