Catalogue Note
This albumleaf of 1842 presents an apparently complete work beginning and ending in B major, comprising three instances of the chordal theme with a three-bar codetta bringing the piece back from E-flat to B major. The distinctive chordal theme was used by Liszt in his piano work 'Après une lecture du Dante, Fantasia quasi Sonata' , the seventh and last number of Années de pèlerinage volume II (LWV A55; S.166). The first draft of this so-called "Dante Sonata" dates from 1837, but it was not published until 1858. There, the theme appears twice, both marked 'Andante', first in F-sharp major (p.10), then in D major played tremolo (p.20). However the Sonata lacks the immediate reiterations of the theme and the distinctive quaver figuration found here.
