Catalogue Note

Éclat/Multiples is one of the composer's best-known and significant works.  Boulez greatly expanded his original 1965 version for chamber ensemble, Éclat, into an orchestral work, Éclat/Multiples in 1970.  The passage quoted can be found on pages 32 to 36 of the Universal Edition hire score (UE 14283, 1970), where the violas are divided into nine parts.  This 1975 quotation helps us distinguish note-heads from articulation marks, which are not always clear in the edition, reproduced from the composer's autograph full score.
