Catalogue Note
FIRST EDITION. This splendid volume was the result of a collaboration between Bidloo, professor of anatomy at the University of Leiden, and the artist Gérard de Lairesse; Lairesse's original drawings from which the plates were made are in the library of the Faculté de Médecine in Paris. "His illustrations brought the qualities of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration, and gave a new, darker spiritual expression to the significance of the act of dissection" (Norman, p.85).
