of deep rounded form rising to a flared rim, molded with two raised bowstrings above the short foot, the exterior covered in a deep powdery-blue glaze, the interior glazed white and inscribed in underglaze blue with a six-character three column mark within double circles and double circles around the rim

Condition

In excellent condition. The glaze to the inside of the rim slightly abraded, caused by the cleaning and removal of affixed surface dirt. Several minute firing imperfections including a burst glaze bubble at the rim.

Catalogue Note

The form of the present bowl is based on Ming dynasty Xuande prototypes with a cover, commonly found in underglaze blue, and underglaze blue and copper red. See four blue and white-decorated bowls and covers, with Xuande reign marks and of the period, in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, included in the Special Exhibition of Selected Hsuan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1998, cat. nos 50-53.
