- Wood
of simianping, 'four sides flush' form, with a single top panel of well-figured burlwood enclosed by a wide, straight-edged frame set directly upon slender corner legs of square section terminating in high hoof feet, the underside with three supporting transverse braces
Condition
The tight, flush joints at the corners and the underside with an even matte black finish indicate that the table has undergone restoration relatively recently perhaps in the last couple of decades. The surface with some nicks and burn marks, the feet with good wear. It is possible that the table originally had a base stretcher which is now missing.

Catalogue Note
Both refined and restrained the present table represents a high point in classical Chinese furniture. The spare and seemingly simple lines are the product of flawless design made possible by very sophisticated joinery. A nearly identical table, described as a qin table, is illustrated in Splendor of Style: Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, National Museum of History, Taipei, 1999, p. 133.
