Condition

The board appears to be stable. There are some very small losses along the bottom edge of the board and a knock in the lower right corner. On close examination it is possible to see some light rubbing to the extreme edges of the panel consistent with frame abrasion. Subject to the above the work appears to be in good condition. Ultraviolet light reveals no obvious signs of florescence or retouching. The work is float mounted in a black painted frame. Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Wendy Baron for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.

This work was re-discovered by Wendy Baron in 2006 and is one of Sickert's earliest depictions of the central position of the west façade of St Jacques seen at the end of rue St Jacques. The oil was included in the leading Parisian dealer Durand-Ruel's first exhibition of Sickert's works in Paris in December 1900. Durand-Ruel alongside the dealer Bernheim Jeune were to have considerable success selling Sickert's paintings both of Dieppe and of Venice in the late 1900s (see Wendy Baron, 'Walter Sickert: Recent Discoveries', Burlington Magazine, 2013, pp.254-259).
