As one of the more sophisticated pieces throughout Fernando Zobel’s oeuvre, El Panadero serves as a fine ensemble of his signature techniques while testifying the artist’s achievements. Yet, this present painting marks its uniqueness by being one of the more personal pieces since it was dedicated to one of Zobel’s friends. Indicated on the bottom of the painting, El Panadero was a special present to a specific person, revealing a more intimate connection between the artwork and the recipient.
El Panadero translates directly back into “The Baker” from Spanish, once again creating a room for the audiences to ponder on. Rather than using a geographical location as his title, Zobel chose to use an occupation as the title for this painting. All these added on a layer of ambiguity onto the painting, allowing the audiences to ponder on the connection among the painting, the recipient, and the title.
