Catalogue Note

The selection of prints emanate from the 1960s when Gujral worked on innumerable drawings of large animal and human forms with prominent hands and feet, engaged in sexual play. Commenting on works from this period, Santo Datta says, “[They] have the rare charm of ceaseless improvisation, open-ended and growing with the ecstatic linear movement of Art Nouveau…The forms are immensely enriched with
purely decorative element at every joint.” (S. Datta, Satish Gujral: Selected Works 1947-2000, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, 2000. p. 5). Two canvases from the early 1960s (Lot 531- 532) are from his post–Mexican period when Gujral developed a
mixed media technique that emulates the texture of mud walls using oil and encaustic.
