Catalogue Note

Kolte's paintings are typically constructed of abstracted fields of colour. The layered application of blocks and drips of paint highlight the medium and process, reminding the viewer of the two-dimensionality of the painted surface. Kolte was trained at the J.J. School of Art in Bombay where he worked under Shankar Palsikar, who experimented with the idea of an indigenous abstraction. His early works were also influenced by Paul Klee, using geometric and organic forms that recreated rather than imitated nature.
