Condition

Executed on cream wove paper not laid down; the sheet is hinged to a mount on the verso of the upper corners. The edges are slightly irregular. The left edge is deckled with multiple very small tears to the extreme edge. Sheet is floating in the mount. Artist pinholes in the upper corners. Some minor time staining to the sheet and a faint flattened crease running diagonally in the lower right hand corner. Small nick to the edge of the sheet at the upper right edge. There are two small spots of restoration visible on the verso of the sheet at lower center and two repaired tears: running vertically from center lower edge and horizontally from the lower right edge towards the lower right corner. A few small spots of foxing, otherwise fine. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

Dating from 1912, Stehend Frau, Beinstudie is an elegant example of Schiele’s remarkable facility with line. It was previously suggested that the model for this work was Wally, although this cannot be confirmed. Stylistically the work appears to belong to a small group of drawings showing a model wearing the same skirt, bloomers and heeled shoes. In one of these, the face is visible and seems to share the crisp features that characterize his depictions of the woman who was both his model and muse.
