  • Vellum
cutting, 163x167mm, vellum, with an initial ‘S’ for a feast of St Peter, the text on the reverse includes the beginning of the chant “[Tu es] Petrus et super [hanc petram. aedificabo ecclesiam meam …]”, minor abrasions to some of the gold at the edges, otherwise in fine condition

An unusual subject in a large attractive initial

The image illustrates the apocryphal story in which Peter flees from Rome, but encounters the resurrected Christ, and asked him “Domine, quo vadis?” (Lord, where are you going to?), to which Jesus replies ‘I go into Rome to be crucified’.
