Condition

The canvas has an old glue relining which remains in good condition, the support being flat and stable. The paint surface appears to have been recently cleaned and restored and presents a good image with some impasto still visible in the drapery and lines of the face. Inspection under UV reveals very little retouching in the face, concentrated only to fine lines of strengthening to the wrinkles around the eyes, nostrils and outline at the right side of the nose. There is a possible old, filled loss of approximately 1 in. to the hair above the ear. There are minor retouches in the beard and scattered throughout the background and more extensive strengthening throughout the drapery. The painting is ready to hang in its current state, presenting a crisp and bright image. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with a slight buckle at the left side.
