Condition

The canvas has an old glue relining which appears to be relatively new. The paint surface is in good condition overall, retaining good detail particularly in the face. Some of the darks in the hair and hat are perhaps a little sunk but remain legible. Inspection under UV reveals what appears to be recent retouching above a milky varnish. There are scattered very minor retouched losses in the background and a few very minor and finely applied retouches in the face, including one on the bridge of the nose and other small retouches in the forehead. There are traces of what appears to be a small, old repaired hole of approximately 1 1/2 in. in the background at left and another old filled loss of 1/2 in. by the sitter's left ear. There is retouching to the upper and lower edges at center, likely the result of frame abrasion. The painting requires no further work and is ready to hang in its present state. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
