Condition

The canvas is flat and stable with a fresh glue lining and the painting appears to have been recently restored, presenting a good clear image. The paint surface is good and clean with a broad craquelure pattern, though this is not distracting to the viewer. Inspection under UV reveals very fine retouching along the craquelure lines through the flesh, it is not possible however to read the darker background. The painting is ready to hang in its present state and is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

In this charming portrait of a young woman, Jacques Antoine Vallin, an artist known for his bacchantes and landscape scenes, appears to be working in a manner influenced by the artist Jean-Baptiste Greuze.
