Catalogue Note
This handsome, large scale depiction of a standard bearer draws influence from a number of sources. While the stylization and direct gazes of the background figures call to mind certain Amsterdam followers of Rembrandt, such as Ferdinand Bol, its technique and the figures engaging stance call to mind various Utrecht Caravaggisti. In this regard, the name of Joachim Sandrart has been suggested, who traveled quite extensively throughout Europe in the entourages of both Gerrit van Honthorst and Peter Paul Rubens, with whom he traveled throughout Holland in 1627.
