Description

  • Pieter de Grebber
  • Portrait of a Woman
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Auguste de Doncker, Brussels;
His sale, Brussels, Salle Delgay, 29 January 1925, lot 39 (as Dutch School, 17th Century).

Condition

This painting appears to be painted on a large single oak panel which is uncradled (no joins are visible from either the back or front). Overall there is very good preservation of the paint surface with nice impasto and detail. The transparent black shawl is particularly well rendered and appears very fresh. Examination under UV light reveals some scattered very small retouches to her face with a larger diagonal line of retouching from just below her nose through center of her mouth and down into her chin. There are other very small, cosmetic retouches scattered on chest, in costume and background, with a larger area at extreme lower right corner. These have all been exceptionally well executed and there is no need for any further work. Offered in an old elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.
