Catalogue Note

The present relief of Moses with the Ten Commandments bears strong resemblance to the work of Pedro de la Cuadra (Valldolid, active 1589-1629). The cumbersome, yet expressive drapery and weighty figure type indicate the relief was probably carved in the late 16th or early 17th centuries in the Castile region. Moses' animated pose, the handling of the thick beard and the estofado decoration in the background are all repeated in de la Cuadro's King David in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Moses with the Ten Commandments would either have been part of an altarpiece depicting Old Testament narratives, or a devotional relief intended for personal use.
