Master of San Miniato

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work may not have been recently restored. However, it is certainly attractive in its current condition. The panel and the frame are co-joined. The frame has perhaps been re-gilded, but is very attractive. The painting itself is cracked and quite rugged, but the retouches have been careful to preserve the antique feel. There are not a lot of retouches visible under ultraviolet light. There is an area in the lower right in the dark cloak of the Madonna which is slightly lumpy, probably because of a knot on the wood. A few cracks within the figures may have been slightly reduced. The darker colors of the clothing may have been slightly restored, but the picture is attractive and looks well as is.
