Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has been restored at a high level, compensating for the uneven level of preservation. While large losses exist, described below, remaining original areas are in good condition. In the bottom right figure, a sizable portion of the red robe has been restored, while in the figure on the bottom left, the hand holding the sword has been restored. The bishop's miter and the shoulder adjacent his crook are largely restoration, as is the wing to the left of the bishop. Losses around the perimeter were likely incurred with the panel was cut from its original setting. Much of the retouching is not readily apparent under ultraviolet illumination but can be recognized by the crack pattern painted on the surface. The varnish is even and saturates the painting. The vertically grained wood panel support displays a mild convex lateral warp. This painting shows no need of treatment in its current condition.
