Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is restored. The canvas has a fairly recent lining applied with glue. In the feathers of the peacock in the center of the picture, there are a few small unrestored patches showing a pink non-original gesso. Under ultraviolet light, one can see that some thinness in the turkey's breast and feathers has received retouching. There are isolated retouches in the darkest colors in the peacock, in the branch beneath the peacock and in a few spots in the sky. However, the condition is surprisingly good for a picture of this kind showing a lot of detail and dark colors. A fresh varnish and a few retouches in the center would perhaps be all that is required to present this picture properly.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. Catalogue Note

De Coninck executed a nearly identical version of this composition, though with the addition of a red parrot perched to the left of the peacock, which was sold London, Sotheby's, 7 July 2005, lot 128.

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution to Coninck following first hand inspection of the original.
