Catalogue Note

David Colijns was born in Rotterdam in 1582, son of the painter Crispiaen Colijns.  Possibly as early as 1607 he was in Amsterdam, where he was married on 27 August 1616.  He served as a member of an Amsterdam guild (most likely St. Luke’s), and was the drawing teacher of Salomon de Koninck.  He is known for painting mythological and Biblical scenes such as the present Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and is last recorded in Amsterdam in 1668.
