Description

Provenance

With Henry Stern, New Orleans;
From whom purchased by the parents of the present owner, in the early 1950s.

Condition

Panel is uncradled. There are four horizontal joins running through composition. One of these is at the extreme lower edge and runs through the signature. All have separated and are visible to the naked eye. There is another crack or join visible at the far right and left sides that runs through the page at left and the background landscape at right. Another small crack can be seen at upper left edge. Abrasions at the edges. Despite all this, the paint surface itself has been very well preserved and there is lovely retention of detail and coloration. Examination under UV light reveals retouching along the joins and cracks, and some at the edges. Otherwise just a few scattered very small retouches. This painting will need work to address the problem of the separated joins, but with sensitive restoration the overall appearance of the painting should improve. In an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.
