Catalogue Note

Jan Baptist Weenix trained in Utrecht under Abraham Bloemaert and in Amsterdam under Claes Cornelisz. Moeyaert before moving to Rome in 1642.   After his return from Italy in 1647 the artist continued to sign his work in Italian, as in the present painting, as Gio[vanni] Batt[ist]a Weenix.   Although primarily known for his Italianate landscapes, he painted a number of highly successful game and animal compositions.
