Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is not recently restored. Nonetheless if some vertical drips on the right side were removed and the varnish freshened, the work could probably be hung in its current state. This is a work of notable scale, and much of the paint layer is in good condition. Under ultraviolet light, it can be seen that some retouches have been carefully applied to address some thinness and discoloration, particularly in the lighter colors of the sky and ice. Some cracking and thinness in the snow on the right side has also developed and there is an actual vertical loss to the right of the seated figure in the foreground in the center. One could continue retouching to reduce some more of the thinness where it is most visible, but the work certainly looks well as is.
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. Catalogue Note

1.  Schulz's citation of a sale at Christies, 18 March 1985, appears to be an inadvertent repetition of this sale.
