Description

  • The assumption of a martyred saint
  • oil on canvas, in a painted lunette

Provenance

Guy Tavoliero;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, 15 June 1977, lot 81 (as by Simon Vouet).

Condition

The canvas has been wax relined and the surface has been pressed as a result. There is scattered thinness in the browns of the painted lunette and bottom ledge, but these areas were probably thinly painted to begin with. Overall the figures read well. Under UV light: there are scattered very small retouches in the sky; some in the dark foreground ledge, mostly at the right side. The figures look good. There are some scattered spots or irregularities in the upper left area of the painted lunette that are visible to naked eye, but this does not fluoresce and may just be an unevenness in the varnish. In a carved and parcel-gilt wood frame with some chipping at corners.
