Catalogue Note
Giovanni Battista Pittoni painted the Sacrifice of Polyxena in at least three variations. This canvas follows the composition of a painting now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (inv. no. 72.PA.18, see F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni, Venice 1979, cat. no. 101, reproduced fig. 261), of which there are four known autograph versions.
