Description

  • Jean Barbault
  • A young woman dressed in Neapolitan fashion
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is unlined. Generally the picture is in healthy condition though it is covered in a dirty varnish and it appears that some of the white pigments in the figure's drapery have thinned somewhat. The painting is covered in a dirty, milky varnish on top of which are a few clear and isolated retouches, namely along the top left edge and the bottom left edge as well as a few scattered in the figure's blouse. The painting could be hung in its current condition as it does present a fine image to the naked eye, or a fresh varnish could be put onto the picture and the older isolated retouches re-examined. In a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

Jean Barbault left his native France for Rome around 1747, and remained in Italy until his death.  Many of his most well-known paintings are charming depictions of single figures set in a dark or neutral background; indeed the artist's two most famous series were a suite of figures in Oriental costume and one of figures in contemporary Italian dress.  The present painting is likely an example from the latter group.
