Description

  • Rosa Bonheur
  • The Grey Horse (At the Horse Fair)
  • oil on canvas
  • 27 by 36 1/2 in.; 68.6 by 92.7 cm

Provenance

Lady Henniker Heaton (according to a label on the stretcher)
Arthur Ackermann & Son, Ltd., London
Acquired from the above on May 17, 1983

Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. The picture surface is fresh and clean, and may be recently restored. Some of the whites in the horse retain a bit of their original impasto. The work is covered by a stable, barely perceptible web of craquelure with some very minor areas of pigment separation, such as in the horse at far left and the man in green. Under UV light, there are scattered retouches throughout the work, notably in the belly of the horse; scattered in the two figures; and widely scattered in the sky, especially at the upper corners. Framed and ready to hang in its current condition.
