Description
- Spanish School, 18th century
- Portrait of King Ferdinand VI of SpainĀ (1713 - 1759), half length, dressed in armor
- oil on canvas, unframed
- 41 1/4 by 32 5/8 in.; 105 by 82.9 cm.
Condition
The canvas is relined. The paint surface has suffered somewhat and is a little unstable in some sections, with areas of blistering and lifting such as that in the red robe over the sitter's left arm. There is an old repaired and filled vertical damage in the background at left, measuring approximately 12 by 2 in. and a small loss to the curtain of approximately 1 by 1/2 in. and another just above the stone ledge of 1 1/2 by 1/4 in. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout, particularly concentrated in the red robe, and strengthening to the background curtain and to the elbow of the armor.
The painting would benefit from a clean and the older restorations could perhaps be reapplied more sensitively. Offered unframed.
