Description

  • Thomas Gainsborough
  • Wooded landscape with a path
  • oil on canvas
  • 14 1/2  by 18 5/8  in.; 37 by 47.4 cm.

Provenance

Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Cox;
By whom donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1926 (as by Thomas Gainsborough, acc. no. 806).

Condition

Oil on canvas, lined. The picture could, potentially, be on a very thin sheet of paper and laid down on canvas. The surface is somewhat flattened and covered by a yellow varnish. There are areas of thinness in the sky, especially in the upper left quadrant. There is a stable web of craquelure over the entire work which appears to have been retouched throughout the landscape. Under UV light, the majority of the work is obscured by a green fluorescing varnish. This varnish is unreadable in the lower third of the picture, though the sky and tree at right appears to have been cleaned at some point.
