Catalogue Note

The practice of dressing young male children in dresses was not uncommon in the early 18th Century throughout Europe. Images of European male child royalty in dresses are somewhat common including an image of the future King Louis XV in an ornately embroidered dress in the Prado, Madrid by Pierre Gobert (dated 1714, inv. no. 2262).
