Description

  • Pietro Dandini
  • The crowning of Bacchus
  • oil on canvas, unlined
  • 46 by 69 1/2 in.; 116.9 by 176.5 cm.

Condition

This picture has not been restored in many years and is unlined. The canvas is very slack on the stretcher, with bumping along the lower edge from the stretcher. The paint surface is obviously very dirty with a discolored yellowing varnish covering what appears to be a rather fresh and untouched paint surface. There are tiny losses to the lower left quadrant of the composition where the canvas is showing. Additional losses visible at lower center; sky at upper center; lower right corner; and the figures at the center right edge. No major areas of retouches are visible and UV light reveals a milky varnish, underneath which no major retouches are visible. With a cleaning and careful restoration this picture will brighten considerably and be ready to hang. In a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

The painting has marked similarities with another Bacchic Revelry by Dandini whose current whereabouts are unknown. (see S. Bellesi, Pittori fiorentini del '600 e '700, Florence 2009, p. 127, reproduced vol. II, p. 203, fig. 428).
