Condition

Oil on cradled panel, There is surface dirt and some thinness throughout the work. There is a vertical panel crack that is visible from top to bottom on the left side, through the edges of the blue cloak. Under UV light, there is scattered retouching to address the thinness of the paint layer, especially in the sky.

This composition derives from Adriaen van de Venne's De Belacchend Werald (The Laughable World), a series of 42 grisailles. A pendant, entitled Only strong legs can carry poverty, is in the Fogg Art Museum, Boston.
