Description
- Johann Carl Loth
- Saint Jerome
- oil on canvas
- 42 1/2 by 32 in.; 108 by 81.3 cm.
Provenance
Possibly Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria, 1927.
Literature
G. Ewald, Johann Carl Loth 1632-1698, Amsterdam 1965, p. 89, cat. no. 269, reproduced plate 9.
Condition
The canvas has an old glue relining which is stable and firm. The paint surface is a little dirty beneath an old varnish, and would benefit from a light clean. Some areas of retouching have discolored, in the background behind St. Jerome's left shoulder and the upper right corner. There is minor frame abrasion along all edges, and scattered minor losses. Inspection under UV is impeded by the old varnish, which fluoresces green under UV light. There appears to be an area of inpaint to St. Jerome's back, scattered retouching addressing craquelure in the bicep, possibly more in the chest though this is difficult to read due to the varnish. There appears to be inpaint in the lower right corner and along the right edge, running 1 in. from the center downward. There is possible retouching to the skull, and possible further inpaint to the upper right corner though again this is obscured by the varnish.
Offered in a carved gilt wood frame
