Description
- Raphael
- Madonna and Child
- oil on panel
- 30 1/2 by 21 in.; 77.5 by 53.4 cm.
Condition
Oil on panel. The surface is in generally good condition aside from surface dirt and dust. There are two vertical cracks - one 1.5 inches, one 2.5 inches - extending from the center of the upper edge. Under UV light, there is a green fluorescing varnish that obscures the picture surface over most of the virgins' blue cloak and parts of the lower landscape. The upper portions of the picture appear to have been cleaned of this varnish; there are scattered small spots and dashes of inpainting across the surface, especially at the extreme edges. Craquelure separation has been addressed in the babies proper right shoulder; proper left chest; and left buttock. Additional retouching in the Virgin's neck and upper torso as well as in her hair.
