Catalogue Note
According to the 1992 exhibition catalogue, Margaret Klinge posits that the present work is not a pastiche after a painting by Veronese, as indicated in the 1965 sale catalogue, as the format is too large and the composition is not reproduced in Teniers' Theatrum Pictorium. Instead, Klinge believes that this may be an original composition by Teniers, perhaps intended as an altar in a private home or chapel, which clearly shows the influence of Venetian painting on Teniers' work in the latter 1650s.
