  • Christ with Angels
  • tempera on panel, unframed
  • 14 3/4 by 11 7/8 in.; 37.5 by 30 cm.

Literature

M.C. Visani, "Un libro sul Boccati," in Arte Veneta, XXVII, 1973, p. 324 (tentatively attributed to the so-called Maestro del Patullo, who was later identified as Girolamo di Giovanni da Camerino).

Condition

Oil on panel. The panel has been cradled and this cradle creates a very slim frame around the panel. The panel is slightly convex from left to right. The extreme edges may be additions and have been painted darker. The surface is in overall fair condition aside from surface dirt, yellowing of the varnish, and abrasions. There is a small puncture to the proper left chest of Christ as well as in the lower left corner. Additional areas of discolored retouching and associated craquelure are visible throughout. Under UV light, the majority of the work is covered by a green fluorescing varnish, with retouches visible both over and under this varnish. There are larger areas of retouching in Christ's left chest and upper right shoulder as well as in the back of the head and the shoulder of the figure at lower left and along the majority of the lower right edge. Additional small scattered spots of retouching throughout.

Catalogue Note

This painting appears to be by an artist from the Marches, who was also active in Padua. It shows the influence of painters such as Giovanni di Piermatteo Boccati and Giovan Angelo di Antonio, both of whom worked in Camerino and Padua in the mid-15th century.
