Description

  • Melchior d'Hondecoeter
  • Chickens and their young in a park landscape
  • oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame
  • 37in by 48in

Condition

The canvas has been relined. The painting has fairly recently been cleaned and restored, and is in very good overall condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two very small 1cm. by 1 cm. repaired damages above the heads of the chickens on the right, and a slightly larger old repaired damage in the upper centre. Otherwise, restoration is confined to only a few minor local retouchings, chiefly to the margins. The varnish remains clear and even and the picture should not require immediate attention. Offered in a carved and gilt English swept wood frame.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Fred G. Miejer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisch Documentatie, The Hague, for pointing out that the prime version of the composition by Hondecoeter was sold Amsterdam, Mak van Waay, 8 December 1966, lot 260, and was subsequently in a Dutch private collection.
