Description

  • 236cm.; 7ft. 9in. high
11½-inch silvered chapter ring signed Lepaute A Paris with centre seconds, sun mask hand for the hour, mean time hand and sun mask equation hand, the open centre revealing an annual calendar and the equation kidney, the movement with four wheel train, Graham deadbeat escapement and rope and weight drive, the waisted bombé case veneered with sprays of flowers and a musical trophy on a walnut ground within a border of kingwood, the sides with diamond parquetry, the front with a gilt-bronze framed lenticle, the whole outlined with further crisply cast and chased leaf and 'C' scroll mounts, the hood twice signed J. Jollain,

Provenance

Adrien-Jerôme Jollain was Master in 1763; Jean André Lepaute came to Paris in 1740; this clock is reputed to have been in the Trianon. Believed to have been given to the grandfather of J.F. Gore, the Hon. Charles Gore, at his marriage in 1845 by his aunt, the Duchess of Inverness, and to have been in the collection of her husband, the Duke of Sussex, at Kensington Palace and to have come from the Trianon. Condition

Dial and hands in good condition, seconds hand probably replaced. Movement is complete, it appears to be reasonably clean and looks as though it would run. Case in good clean restored condition, evidence of old repairs to minor veneer cracks, lower panel rather faded and could be improved, mounts have been cleaned. With pendulum, weight and counter-weight but no case key.
