Description

  • gold, colord stone, pearl, diamond
The tassel-style brooch of Mughal inspiration, composed of panels set with variously-shaped diamonds and colored stones, decorated with numerous pearls, gross weight approximately 35 dwts, signed Cartier Paris, numbered 014303, with French assay and maker's marks; circa 1935.

Condition

In fair to good condition, commensurate with the age of the brooch and the materials used in Indian jewelry. The brooch is likely composed of antique Indian elements mounted in high-karat gold which were arranged and mounted by Cartier Paris in 18 karat gold. The high karat gold exhibits moderate to significant denting commensurate with age and the relative "softeness" of the material. As is typical in Indian jewelry, the gold is hammered in thin sheets and is likely filled with "pitch" and some of the "pitch" shows (especially at the top of the brooch) where the gold has peeled away. The pearls range in shape from round to off-round. They exhibit good to fair luster, white to silvery white body colors and soft pink and green overtones. Many of the pearls exhibit some degree of peeling to the nacre. One of the pendants hanging from the central element contains colorless sapphires while the other has diamonds. The diamonds and colored stones are decorative in quality. Length approximately 2 1/2 inches.
