Catalogue Note

With its striking contours and whimsical design, this brooch represents the unique blending of styles that occurred when Fulco di Verdura was designing jewels for Paul Flato. Flato and Verdura shared similar aesthetics and enthusiasm for jewels that were bold and dramatic, with a touch of humor. This piece is emblematic of Flato jewels at the time, with its sculpted center and star-shaped form. The playful ropetwist accents along the frame are reminiscent of the wrapped jewel designs Verdura later created at his own firm. Created in the height of Hollywood's Golden Age, this piece exemplifies the beautiful drama for which this period and designers are best known.
