Provenance

Condition

Original canvas. The canvas appears sound. The canvas undulates very slightly on its stretcher towards the left side of the upper horizontal edge, and there is a small push to the canvas just to the left of centre of the lower horizontal edge. There is a scuff to the canvas in the upper left quadrant, with some associated rubbing and paint loss. There are some scattered areas of rubbing to the work, primarily around the edges of the canvas, with some very minor associated losses, most apparent to the upper right corner. There is some very light scratching to the dark green pigment in the upper left quadrant. There are one or two very fine lines of craquelure, visible to the left of the figure's face and to the right of her hands. There are some extremely tiny flecks of paint loss in one or two areas across the work, most apparent to the upper edge of the figure's right arm, and the lower left corner. There is some light surface dirt across the work. Subject to the above the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching. The work is presented in an ornate painted composite frame with linen slip. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
