Catalogue Note

'A race against autumn.  I wanted to take on the garden because in the past I’ve either put the chunk indoors or done it from a distance.  I was very conscious of where I was leading the eye.  Where I wanted the eye to go but not to rest; that the eye shouldn’t settle anywhere.'

(Quoted in Figura, Starr, Lucian Freud: The Painter’s Etchings, MoMA, New York, 2007, p.32)
