Condition

These iconic doors - designed by architect MJ Long - were removed from The Ivy restaurant and are being sold as decorative objects. They display typical signs of wear and tear from regular use since their installation in circa 1990. The leather handles are worn. Old marks, scratches and stains commensurate with age and use, particularly to the base of the doors as visible in the catalogue image. Some of the brass plaques to the lower section are loose. The doors have a simple bolt locking mechanism to the top of each door which fixes to the lintel and is operated from the inside. The hinges are spring loaded and would therefore require professional assistance to install if you wanted to use them as functioning doors. Further images available from the department but gallery inspection is thoroughly recommended.

Catalogue Note

When Jeremy King and Chris Corbin commissioned architect M. J. Long to redesign The Ivy in 1990, their brief for the entrance was simple, it should not be too inviting. Long drew up a scheme to replace the existing entrance, ‘something in cut-out steel, responding to the grille beneath the windows’ (Callum Murray, ‘A Taste for Art’, The Architect’s Journal, 29 January 1992, p.23).
