signed MASTER OF THE WATER, PINE AND STONE RETREAT, inscribed, dated '15, and with three seals of the artist
Inscription:
An ancient branch, long dead, its heart-wood partially eaten by insects, the surface bleached by sunlight and scoured by the elements, made a powerful fulfilment sceptre. I used it myself for some years but then gave it to the Incense Drunk Hermit with whom I once shared a mountain retreat. His affinity to it far outweighed my own. In his hands it was more powerful and compliant to the point where when he hung it upright on a peg beside the hearth its tassel would slowly rise upwards, like smoke from the nearby root censer he kept constantly lit. The surface of the ruyi also began to change once he owned it. Its resemblance to a wave at dusk began to gather bats flitting across the spume, at first one, then many. Still more miraculously, within a matter of months its knob, below which the tassel was attached, also began to resemble the hermit. Strange events indeed!
Inscribed by the Master of the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat at the Garden at the Edge of the Universe, Spring ' 15.
