The presentation inscription also includes Isherwood's catchphrase from this period, quoting Iago in Shakespeare's Othello ('There's many a beast, then, in the populous city | and many a civil monster').

Isherwood became intimately acquainted with Chisholm in the summer of 1937 when he put him up when the author was giving two lectures at Cambridge.
