Catalogue Note

Gervase Mathew was a close friend of Greene's, and the dedicatee of The Power and the Glory. He read the proof of the novel and recommended replacing a Wordsworth quotation with one by Dryden; separately he wrote a very favourable review of Greene's The Lawless Roads for the Catholic periodical Blackfriars. (See biographies by Michael Sheldon and Norman Sherry.)
PRESENTATION COPIES OF "THE THIRD MAN", ONE OF GREENE'S MOST CELEBRATED WORKS, ARE VERY UNCOMMON.
